22. Wilco - Capitol City
I once heard this song while shuffling through my library and decided I liked it a lot. As is usual, I found ways to justify my sudden feelings. I was away from home when I first played it and I could have accepted the nostalgia assault through “Capitol City”. The lyrics are quite quotable, by my standards, they sound full of heart. However, I rather enjoyed the song because of the tenderness of the performance itself (the soft prolongations interlocking each section and the ingenuous simplicity of the arrangement can’t stop making me blush) than further sentimentalisms. However vapid this may sound, it’s just the way I like the track.
So, this could pretty much pass off as a great McCartney song (is that a bold or stupid statement?). Yeah, I hear funny trains and a deeply mellow instrumentation in “Capitol City” and I automatically link these oddities to songs like “Maxwell Silver Hammer”, or maybe “Getting Better”. Point is: there’s no way to miss the not-so-subtle feel in the song. There’s no way to rise above The Beatles throwback; I mean, it’s inevitable! But I try not to use much of my care on it. It’s a whole other dimension through which I love the track.
